What is VOHC?

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is an independent organisation that evaluates pet dental products. Their Seal of Acceptance is awarded to products that meet strict standards for controlling plaque and tartar. Swedencare’s ProDen PlaqueOff® range proudly carries the VOHC seal, ensuring safe and effective dental care for pets.

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal provides pet owners with the reassurance that they are not only using a high-quality product but also one that is proven to be effective and safe for their furry companions. VOHC requirements are stringent and include two categories of claims: "Helps Control Plaque" and "Helps Control Tartar." Plaque is a bacteria-rich, soft layer that rapidly forms on the surface of teeth. These bacteria cause gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and initiate the process of periodontal disease. Tartar consists of calcium salts from saliva that accumulate on the tooth surface, forming a hard substance that is difficult to remove through chewing or brushing. Products receive the VOHC seal following a review of data from studies conducted in accordance with VOHC protocols.

Swedencare’s first VOHC-accepted product was ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder for Dogs, followed by ProDen PlaqueOff® Dental Bites for Dogs, ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder for Cats, ProDen PlaqueOff® Dental Bones for Dogs, and finally, ProDen PlaqueOff® Soft Chews for Dogs. We continuously strive to have more products VOHC-accepted for our customers. When purchasing pet products, always look for the VOHC seal to ensure you are selecting items that genuinely contribute to your pet’s oral health. Swedencare is proud that our ProDen PlaqueOff® products have received the seal in both categories.

Powder for Cats

ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder for Cats, which contains the natural seaweed A.N ProDen®, efficiently and significantly reduces plaque and tartar formation, as well as bleeding gums in cats. This was demonstrated in two 30-day clinical trials in which 60 cats were randomly divided into two groups and given either ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder for Cats or a placebo. In these studies, plaque was reduced by 37%, tartar build-up by 67%, and bleeding gums by 61% after 30 days of use compared to the placebo group.

Powder for Dogs

The VOHC studies aimed to determine the impact of ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder on canine oral health. The test was conducted on seven different breeds, with a total of 30 male and female dogs. After 30 days of oral administration, ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder significantly reduced plaque and tartar accumulation, as well as gingival (gum) bleeding, compared to the placebo group. The mean reduction was 32% for plaque, 35% for tartar, and 67% for gingival bleeding.

Dental Bones for Dogs

The basis for the VOHC approval of ProDen PlaqueOff® Dental Care Bones for small and large dogs was a blinded, controlled, randomised, unicentre trial. 3 studies with 30 dogs in each, where the dogs were divided into 2 groups, each consisting of one control group and one receiving Dental Care Bones. All groups receiving Dental Care Bones showed significantly improved oral health compared to the control group, with up to a 50.4% reduction in plaque, a 69.4% reduction in tartar, and a 92.7% reduction in gum bleeding.

Dental Bites for Dogs

ProDen PlaqueOff® Dental Bites, containing A.N ProDen®, effectively reduced plaque and tartar accumulation in the study dogs. The measured concentration of volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) and Oral Health Index in the study group showed significantly lower VSC levels and improved oral health status. These studies on oral health, including plaque and tartar reduction, form the basis for awarding the VOHC Seal of Acceptance for oral health to ProDen PlaqueOff® Dental Bites for Dogs.

Soft Chews for Dogs

ProDen PlaqueOff® Soft Chews, containing A.N ProDen®, effectively and significantly reduced plaque and tartar accumulation in both large and small dogs. Additionally, the product demonstrated a reduction in gingival bleeding, supporting overall oral health. Based on these study results, ProDen PlaqueOff® Soft Chews for large and small dogs were awarded the VOHC seal in the "Helps Control Plaque" and "Helps Control Tartar" claim categories.

FAQ: VOHC

VOHC stands for the Veterinary Oral Health Council, an independent organisation that evaluates and recognises pet dental products proven to reduce plaque and tartar build-up.

VOHC approval ensures that a product meets scientific standards for effectiveness in promoting pet oral health. Products awarded the VOHC Seal of Acceptance have undergone rigorous testing and have been proven to help control plaque and tartar, reducing the risk of dental disease.

To receive VOHC approval, a pet dental product must undergo clinical trials demonstrating its ability to reduce plaque or tartar. The results are reviewed by veterinary dental experts to ensure effectiveness and safety before granting the VOHC seal.

Swedencare’s ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder, ProDen PlaqueOff® Dental Bites, ProDen PlaqueOff® Dental Bones, and ProDen PlaqueOff® Soft Chews have earned the VOHC Seal of Acceptance for their ability to support oral health in dogs and cats.
